Work commenced in summer 2013 on the refurbishment of the Council owned Municipal Offices, located within the Town Hall Square area of Grimsby.  Upon completion, the £1.5 million refurbishment will be one of two town centre ‘hubs’ for Council staff.  The alteration work will allow the Council to concentrate the number of staff in the building from the current 131 to 338 staff in an effort to provide cost saving.

The existing installation consisted of Category 5 and Category 5e outlets that provided LAN connectivity across all floors.  These outlets were wired back to a number of local network cabinets which were located throughout the building.  In addition to this, there was a number of redundant block wired telephone cabling systems within the building which had to be removed.

Prior to an installation work commencing, all redundant Category 5/5e cabling, the associated wall outlets, telephone cabling, outlets and distribution points located on the ground, first, second and third floors were to be disconnected and removed.

In total 490 Category 5e outlets were installed over the four floors.  The existing network cabinets were retained, with the Category 5e outlets being wired back to these.  The cabinet link cables were upgraded from Category 5e to Category 6a.  The installation was made more difficult by some of the areas remaining occupied by Council staff and the ground floor remaining open to the public.  This meant that this element of the works had to be undertaken out of hours.  The project spanned six months.
